Scindapsus ‘Mayari’

Origin and Discovery:
Scindapsus ‘Mayari’ is a white variegated sport of one of the forms of Scindapsus pictus.
The originator stumbled upon a single-leaf plant at a small plant show in Manila approximately ten years ago.
This one-leaf wonder exhibited the persistent white variegation that has been propagated through cuttings
Name and Symbolism:
The name “Mayari” pays homage to the Philippine goddess of the Moon.
Mayari embodies qualities such as combat, revolution, equality, beauty, strength, and the night.
Her light, though not as bright as her brother (the Sun), reflects the charm and beauty of the moon.
The word “yari”, meaning ‘completed’ or ‘perfected’, is intertwined with her name.
Just like the Moon’s phases, the white variegations on Scindapsus ‘Mayari’ add layers of character to each plant, striving for its own version of perfection1.
Growth Habit and Care:
Light: Place your Scindapsus ‘Mayari’ in indirect bright light.
Soil: Use well-draining potting soil, and ensure the pot has large drainage holes.
Watering: Water slowly and deeply when the top two inches of soil feel dry to the touch.
Temperature: Maintain a growth temperature range of 65°F to 85°F. Cold temperatures can harm the plant, while dry air may cause brown leaf tips.
Humidity: Aim for 40% to 50% relative humidity around your Scindapsus ‘Mayari’ for optimal growth
Leaf Characteristics:
Shape: The leaves are flat and ovate-cordiform, with acute apices and cordate bases.
Size: Young leaves measure around 8-10 cm in length, while mature leaves reach about 13 cm. Width varies from 4-6 cm (young) to 7 cm (mature).
Color: The green base color is adorned with raised silver patterns due to the white variegation.
Bloom and Fruit: Not observed yet, but the foliage steals the show with its striking appearance
Distinguishing Feature:
Scindapsus ‘Mayari’ stands out from other Scindapsus pictus cultivars like ‘Exotica’ due to its white variegation on the leaf blades.
The variegation can range from a white sliver in the center of the leaf to the entire leaf, creating a mesmerizing “full moon” effect
Conclusion
Scindapsus ‘Mayari’ combines elegance, symbolism, and ease of care. Whether you’re a seasoned plant enthusiast or a beginner, this cultivar promises to add celestial beauty to your indoor jungle. Happy planting
